Happy 140th birthday, Will Rogers.
I have always had a special place in my heart for that unique breed of talented, humorous quipsters, especially those who serve it all up with a side of extra spicy irreverence. My all-star team would include Churchill, Twain, Marx (not Karl), Kin Hubbard, Dorothy Parker, and George Kaufman. And I might well select Will Rogers, The Cowboy Philosopher, as captain.
His quotes are both witty and timeless. Here are some faves:
“Everything is changing in America. People are taking the comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke.”
” An ignorant person is one who doesn’t know what you have just found out.”
“I belong to no organized party. I am a Democrat.”
“Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.”
“Our constitution protects aliens, drunks and U.S. Senators.”
“There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.”
“Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.”
“Common sense ain’t common.”
“The road to success is dotted with many tempting parking spaces.”
“If pro is the opposite of con, what is the opposite of Congress?”
“I don’t make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.”
“The trouble with practical jokes is that very often they get elected.”
HBD, Mr. Rogers
