The second reason (that kids don’t connect with mentors) has to do with our current national test mania.  However well-intentioned No Child Left Behind might have been, it has served to hijack teachers away from those endeavors not directly related to improving test scores.  Not only has this devalued any and all extra-curricular activities – the arena where mentors are most likely to be found – it has squeezed art and music out of the curriculum, also a haven for mentors.  At the end of the day, there is very little incentive for adults to work with kids in these capacities, making it harder for kids to make connections with mentors.
