One of my favorite journeys is the 12-mile cruise down the Kennebec River from Bath to Georgetown via… stand-up paddleboard (SUP). You put in about an hour after high tide and ride the outgoing tide for a head-clearing 2-3 hours.

Last Saturday was my first run of the season. It felt eerie not to encounter a single boat all day, but definitely cool to be accompanied by a harbor seal for most of the way.Malert SUP

The trip goes by Doubling Point in Arrowsic – photo above – a 100+ year old navigational testament to maritime ingenuity. (Visually line up the two lighthouses and you got deep water.)

A few miles later, you encounter Phippsburg Center with Squirrel Point Light on your left and beautiful Phippsburg Congregational Church on your right.
