If you know anything about the history of the Discovery Process, you know that Halifax (PA) Middle School was the first public school to institute and implement the program. It was 1997 when Bob Halifax, then a newly appointed principal, launched the program at Halifax Middle School. After Bob became the Halifax superintendent of schools, he made the Discovery Process an integral part of the fabric of all Halifax schools.
Two years ago, Dr. David Hatfield, current Halifax superintendent of schools and a longtime practitioner of the Discovery Process, established the Discovery in Action Award to honor a graduating student at Halifax HS who reflects the ideals and traditions of the program. David explains, “Our criteria for the award is simple: Nominate a graduating senior who best exemplifies the character traits of the Discovery Process: courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity, and concern.”
This year, the award was given to Skylar Latsha. Nominated by multiple staff members, one teacher wrote, “I cannot think of a better exemplification of Discovery in Action than Skylar Latsha. She was and continues to be a person of the strongest character and integrity. She has a genuine heart for other people, a true desire to learn and be the best she can be, and makes the school and community a better place through action and her presence.”
Another remarked, “Skylar spearheaded the Four Diamonds fundraising event including planning and organizing, raising funds, facilitating, and clean up. As a senior class official she also demonstrated responsibility and respect. Her willingness to listen to others and effectively communicate with peers and adults in a variety of settings is apparent… she is able to laugh at herself, and she carries herself with humility.”
Concurring with these two collagues, Hatfield observes, “I could not agree more. I only wish I could convince her to enter the field of education.”
In September, Skylar will begin her studies in psychology at Harrisburg Area Community College where she will complete her general education courses before transferring to Susquehanna University. She then has a goal to pursue a pursue a Masters degree.
Congrats to Skylar and the Halifax HS Class of 2023!
Onward, Malcolm Gauld
* Fun Fact: Although retired, Bob Hassinger shows his continued commitment to the Discovery Process by funding the award!
