I was introduced to the “Words” in 1968 as a Hyde freshman. By the time I graduated (1972), they had become (and remain) the True North of my moral compass. The “Principles” came on the scene in the late 80s when I was Hyde’s freshly minted head of school. As a young Hyde student observed around the turn of the millennium, “As I see it, the 5 Words are what I need to do and the 5 Principles are what we need to do.” Sometimes the kids know best. We’ll keep working on both the I’s and We’s.
