So, I put together a Spotify playlist of musicians who 1) attended, 2) taught at, or 3) sent children to Hyde. To access: 1) Go to Spotify. 2) Search “Happy-Go-Lucky Throng Songs.” 3) Click on “Playlists.”
With no further adieu, let us “swell the joyous strain.” Great stuff here!
- “In Water” by Bay Ledges (Zach Hurd ’99)
- “So Damn Lucky” by Bailey Kent ’18
- “Waiting for the Wind” – A.W.L. Mix by Liah Alonso ’98
- “In Between” by Matt Newberg (former faculty) & The Hearts of Gold
- “Through Your Hands” by John Hiatt (2-time HAPA parent)
- “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Michael McDonald (HAPA parent)
- “Blueprint” by Stealing Oceans (Brian Thompson ’07)
- “The Crazy Crazy Ones” by Chris Chickering ’88
- “The Key to Gramercy Park” by Deadsy (Elijah Allman ’93 and Renn Hawkey ’92)
- “Spring at Last” by Peter Ciluzzi ’93
- “Crack the Code – Louie Vega Cosmic Mix” by Jesse Jackson ’96
- “Golden” by Georgia Hurd ’03
- “Little Red Corvette” by Brett Hunter ’07
- “What the Hell Are We Doing” by Adam Stern ’02
- “Start a Landslide” by Mark Radcliffe (former faculty)
- “Lovin’ Every Minute” by Joe Gallant ’05
- “Lost Weekend” by Dylan McDonald ’07 & The Avians
- “Always in My Head” by India.Arie (Jim Lightman ’83, RIP) No, India.Arie did not go to Hyde, but Jim Lightman received multiple Grammy nominations for his engineering work on this and other albums. Based in Nashville, he was also a highly respected session man.
- “Breathe” by Jennifer Tefft. (Jeff St. Pierre ’83 plays all the instruments on this number!)
- “99 Pounds” by Max Kaplan ’15 & The Magics
- “Say Hey” by Bleu McAuley and Chloe Jackson ’99
- “Empire State of Mind” by JAY-Z, Alicia Keys (Tony Dawsey ’79, Mastering Engineer) – Considering that I could make a separate playlist consisting of just his Grammy Awards… No Joke!… Tony was problematic for me. So, I went with a song that you just might have heard before. What a career! I like to take some credit for giving him his first professional gig: Photographer at Laura’s and my wedding 43 years ago when the ink on his Hyde diploma had yet to dry.
I know there are more, but I either don’t know their band names or just could not find their stuff on Spotify. (If you can help me out, email — mgauld@hyde.edu — or PM me.) Extra credit if anyone can dig up “Turning of the Wheel” by a NH band called Lunch at the Dump, featuring the inimitable John Holden ’71, RIP, on fiddle. (Check it out on YouTube.)… I also want to give a shut-out to Rebekah Foster ’80 on her distinguished career on the production side of the music biz. If you know a song she’s had a heavy hand with, pass it on. Anyway…
“Singing always as we go marching On(ward)” – Malcolm Gauld
Not wishing to “blow my own horn” but Managing Alice Cooper from the very beginning to their Greatest Hits LP aint chopped liver! “Schools Out”
Embarrassing to note that I somehow missed this note from 3 months ago. “Managing Alice Cooper” makes for a nice oxymoronic book title. Best you you and the fam! – Malcolm
