Any serious list of Maine lobster shacks will include Georgetown’s 5 Islands Lobster Co. (Everything’s good, but I go for the grilled tuna sandwich.) If you go, expect to drive 20 minutes from Bath but don’t expect it to look like this:
The place is jammed throughout the summer and parking spaces can be non-existent. After you’ve parked, get in line, put your order in, memorize your order number, and then take a stroll over to Five I Fuel & Harborside General Store. (You won’t miss your order as they yell it out for all to hear.) Before you’ve walked 100 feet, be sure to check out the daily quote posted on the chalk board on the exterior wall of the cedar shingled shack between you and the Atlantic. I don’t know the identity of Quote Poster (QP), but it’s definitely a cool thing.
Being a quote junkie, I love it!
And they are usually ones that I have not heard before. Like this gem from Mark Twain.
Some I have heard before, but that’s not a bad thing.
I have indeed noticed that QP has some favorites.
In fact, I’ve seen a couple of repeats over the years.
And here’s another Twain.
Some get right to the point.
And some require some thinking.
But thinking is a good thing to do while you’re waiting for a lobster roll.
It also gives you something to talk about on the road back to Bath.
