I start each day with my morning coffee at my home computer. I roll the iTunes and get to work. Eventually a song comes on that fits the day, and I post it on Twitter. Here are my last 20 songs:

  1. “Local Girls” by Graham Parker. A rocker from the poor man’s Elvis Costello.
  2. “Stranded” by Shawn Colvin. Great rainy day tune.
  3. “Wait A Little Longer” by Eddie Harris. From “EH in the UK” – a pillar of my college era soundtrack.
  4. “Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands” by Bob Dylan (Trancelike, 11+ minutes off “Blonde on Blonde.”
  5. “Greenhouse” by New Monsoon. Infectious upbeat number off this SF band’s excellent new “Live” album.
  6. “Don’t Knock at my Door” by NRBQ. Off the classic “Scraps” album. (“…… I knew I’d get to you someday.”)
  7. “Sporting Life Blues” by J. J. Cale & Eric Clapton. From their awesome collaboration, “The Road to Escondido.”
  8. “Long Gone (From Bowling Green)” by Louis Armstrong (w/Velma Middleton). Off “Louis Armstrong Plays W. C. Handy.” Great!
  9. “Hobo Jungle” by The Band. From “No Lights/So. Cross” – “Playing the odds, from a rolling boxcar.”
  10. “Go Home Girl” by Ry Cooder. Off “Bop ‘Til You Drop.” Is there a better song about male friendship?
  11. “The Usual Thing” by Marshall Crenshaw. Off an eponymous debut (1982) album that still holds up after a quarter+ century.
  12. “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” by Digable Planets. Off “Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space).” I’m cool like dat!
  13. “Mack the Knife” by Ella Fitzgerald off “Ray Charles – Artist’s Choice.” Ella forgets the words, improvizes. Incredible!
  14. “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” by R.E.M. Off “Document.” …”Leonard Bernstein!….. Lester Bangs.”
  15. “There Is Always One More Time” by B.B. King. The King of the Blues brings some church (and of course, Lucille) and inspires.
  16. “To and Fro” by Jim Boggia. Quality power pop. Brings to mind happy pre-Sgt. Peppers Beatles. Off “Misadventures in Stereo.”
  17. “Make A Hit Record” off “The London Bo Diddley Sessions.” Hot licks and stuttering as rock form. Download this!
  18. “I’ll be Around” by The Charlie Watts Quintet. Stones drummer shows his cool, soothing jazz chops. Off “Warm & Tender” (1993).
  19. “Watergate Blues” by Howlin’ Wolf. “…found a little piece of tape, now the whole world knows.” Off “The Back Door Wolf” (’73)
  20. “The Silver-Tongued Devil & Eye” The title track off the PhD/Rhodes Scholar’s 1971 gold album.

Onward, Malcolm Gauld
