Churchill’s Wicked Wit

When Laura and I were in London a few months back I came across a cool book with a title that needs no explanation: The Wicked Wit of Winston Churchill by Dominique Enright . (Michael O’Mara Books, 2001) No one mastered the on-your-feet comeback better than him. Check out this telegraph exchange between Churchill and George Bernard Shaw, a man who was also no slouch in the wit department.

Shaw: Two tickets reserved for you, first night Pygmalion. Bring a friend. If you have one.

Churchill: Cannot make first night. Will come to second. If you have one.
