Malcolm Gauld Executive Director, The Hyde Institute (Bath, Maine)
For forty-five years, Malcolm Gauld has served as a history teacher, coach of championship teams in four different sports, and head of school. He is currently executive director of the Hyde Institute, an organization he founded in 2018 to design, create, and share character-based learning opportunities with school communities across the country. The Institute’s first offering, the Hyde Discovery Process, is a reinvented homeroom model designed to create and maintain a dynamic and inspiring school culture.
In 1999, Malcolm and his wife Laura, current president and CEO of Hyde School, established the Biggest Job parenting workshops and have since presented their program to thousands of parents across the United States as well as in Canada, Asia, and Europe. Their book The Biggest Job We’ll Ever Have – The Hyde School Program for Character-based Education and Parenting (Scribner, 2002) was translated into a Mandarin Chinese edition in 2018.
Malcolm is the author of College Success Guaranteed (2011, Rowman Littlefield) and Character Success Guaranteed 2.0 (2014, RL). His forthcoming book about the Discovery Process – Culture by Design – The Discovery Process as New Way for Schools – will be published by RL in the summer of 2023.
Malcolm received his B.A. in history at Bowdoin College and his Masters at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. In 1995, he was honored to be selected as a Klingenstein Fellow at Teachers College, Columbia University.
A lifelong athlete, he continues to play basketball, Grand Masters lacrosse, and has completed several marathons. An avid waterman, he was a 2016 finisher in Sea Paddle NYC, a stand-up paddle (SUP) circumnavigation of Manhattan for the cause of autism research. He is passionate about popular music and blues harmonica. He and Laura are the proud parents of three grown children – Mahalia, Scout, and Harrison – and grandparents to Paul Lynch III (P3!).
