This afternoon our women’s lacrosse team set a very high bar for the future of Hyde athletics when Bailey Kent ’18 (daughter of former faculty Jen and Jeff) scored a clutch OT goal to give us an 8-7 victory over a Gould team that gave us all we could handle. Not only did Bailey’s goal put the MAISAD championship trophy in our trophy case in The Joe for the first time since 2010, it capped our first ever undefeated lacrosse season (11-0).
What a season! Although we rolled over a number of teams, there were also some very close calls, including a 12-11 OT victory (again, Bailey!) over longtime rival Hebron and a hard fought 9-7 win over Kents Hill that closed out our regular season. Throughout the season, this group kept finding a way to win. They had solid senior leadership and great coaching from Tom Bragg ’83, Rich Truluck ’88, and KC Hambleton.
It was especially cool to have so many alum and faculty children play such key roles in today’s game and throughout the season. For one, Emma Geertgens ’19 was a defensive stalwart all season.
And while this 4-some will likely make any Hyde alum from the 90s feel old, they consistently ruined the days of many of all their opponents.
As a lifelong Hyde lacrosse fan, I want to say thanks for the memories, ladies! And when it comes to memories, know that when you return for alumni reunions many years from now, you’ll have no need to exaggerate about your athletic exploits. (Full disclosure: Despite Hyde’s commitment to integrity, alums have occasionally been known to stretch the athletic truth at reunions.) Some say that truth is stranger than fiction. Sometimes it is also more impressive.
