In mine, it’s tough to beat those unexpected moments when a kid rises to a new height of accomplishment or acts in a manner consistent with our schools’ highest ideals. It’s also pretty cool when a current or former student thanks you for your contributions to their development. (Even when they mistakenly give you undue or too much credit — I learned a long time ago to assume that I’m likely neither as good or as bad as they say. — it feels good.)
I experienced one such moment this week when a Hyde senior excitedly informed Laura and me of his admission to his first choice college. Here’s the email he sent to both of us:
I would like to say that I just got accepted to ____________, my top-choice! Looking back on where I was three/four/five years ago, I didn’t think that something like this could happen to me. I cannot thank you two enough for the immense amount of support and guidance you have given me! Because I have known you two for a good amount of time, I wanted to share this new chapter in my life with you!
What can I say? How about, in the spirit of this holiday season, let’s leave it at… “It’s a wonderful life.”
