A Dozen (+ Bonus) Odd & Ends: The Case for Sports:
In recent weeks, a group of teachers, administrators, and coaches from Hyde’s Bath and Woodstock campuses have been exploring the role of sports in our curriculum. Before long, we all started contributing random quotes and observations to the discussion. Here’s what came out of my head:
1. “Good sports produce good sports.” — Moi
2. “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” — Unknown
3. “The Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton.” — often (but probably incorrectly) attributed to the Duke of Wellington
4. “Sports is life with the volume turned up.” — attributed to Jim Tunney, “Dean” of NFL Officials
5. “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career, lost almost 300 games, missed the game winning shot 26 times. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. That is why I succeed.” — Michael Jordan
6. “You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.” — Wayne Gretzky, hockey legend
7. “Always imitate the behavior of the winner when you lose.” — Anonymous
8. “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” — Gary Player, golfer
9. “If you make every game a life-and-death proposition, you’re going to have problems. You’ll be dead a lot” — Dean Smith, UNC hoops coach/icon
10. “It’s never crowded along the extra mile.” — Wayne Dyer, author/speaker
11. “Female high school athletes are: 1) 92% less likely to get involved with drugs; 2) 80% less likely to get pregnant; 3) 3 times more likely to graduate than non-athletes.” – Women’s Sports Foundation (Founded in 1974 by tennis great Billie Jean King)
12. “I am opposed to sports being exclusive, where the only children who have a chance to succeed are those who already are skilled.” — Rainer Martens, Joy and Sadness in Youth Sports
BONUS: “The hardest thing about prize fightin’ is pickin’ up yer teeth with boxing gloves on.” – Kin Hubbard, American Humorist
