A Hyde parent responded to my last posting with this quick follow-up about Mainers and jumper cables:

Last spring a Portland police officer on Peaks Island asked to borrow my jumper cables so as to get enough jumper cables strung together to go some 75 to 100 feet from  a pick-up on the road to get a motor boat started off the rocks on the ocean side of the island. The Coast Guard could not come because they were rescuing someone out at sea.
