Malcolm GauldI have a soft spot for towns and cities where the core of the culture is to “make something.” That’s true of my hometown: Bath, Maine.
Bath kids grow up knowing what “under time, under budget means” because that’s how ships have been made here for over 3 centuries. (In fact, it’s actually 4 centuries when you consider that the first ship in the New World was built at nearby Popham Beach in 1607.)
There’s something cool about living in a place where everyone knows: of all the places around the world where they make the thing that we make, we make it the best. This sign says it all. That’s called putting your name on your work. We like to think that it rubs off on our kids. I like to think that it rubs off on all our kids, even those “from away.”
